The participation of Porsche in Formula-1 in the eighties was limited by the engine, but what engine, possibly one of the most successful in the formula of the twentieth century. The chassis McLaren MP4/2 became the development of the model MP4/1E of 1983. Having won 2 Designer Cups and three Champion titles within the period of three years, the race car became the most successful in the whole history of Formula 1.
The car was one of the first made entirely of carbon fiber reinforced plastic –plastic, following Lotus. The power-train represented a turbocharged TAG Porsche V6 engine, first employed in the closing stages of 1983 season at Niki Lauda’s urgent request, who promised that it would be possible to contend for the championship with this engine.

The MP4/2 was one of the first bolides, using carbon brake disks, which gave the advantage over competitors. The mastership of Lauda and Prost allowed the team McLaren to achieve 12 victories in the season of 1984 — at that point in time it was the top achievement of the particular team. Often and often the drivers of McLaren were the only ones, who finished in the limits of one lap – so a great pull they had over the rivals. The team won the Designer Cup, confidently leaving behind Ferrari.
In 1985 the aerodynamics was improved, the car configuration was changed, the spoilers were remade (according to new rules) and TAG conducted the work to improve the engine. The supremacy of the MP4/2 ceased in 1986, when Finn Keke Rosberg became the partner of Prost. By that time the status of the best racing car was taken by Williams FW11. During its 3-year career the MP4/2 won 22 Grand Prix (Prost — 16, Lauda — 6), завоевал 7 поулов (Прост — 6, Росберг — 1) и набрал 329 очков.
