In May 1973 this new Porsche took part in the race CanAm on the Road Atlanta driven by Mark Donohue. The 917/30 Spyder was the strongest racing car ever used in that race. It had a twelve-cylinder 5.4 liter engine of 1,200 horse power. No wonder, that Donohue won steadily, having been 7:57 minutes ahead of his closest opponent. The superiority of the racing cars Porsche was so great, that the contest rules of this sport (CanAm championship) were altered in the shortest time possible, and the further participation of the 917 in the next season was excluded. In August of 1975 the 917/30 hit the headlines once again, when Mark Donohue set up a lap record on the oval track Talladega, Alabama, which is not broken till now: the fastest lap at speed of 355.85 km/h.
