1962 LTZ T-5 Prototype
On the T-5 tractor, all the wheels were driving and steered, of the same diameter. The engine was offset forward onto the front side, whereas the cab was mounted in the center. At the same time, the tractor weight was statically distributed as follows: 60% on the front axle and 40% on the rear one.
One of the tractor transmission features was application of the multi-disk clutch with steel friction elements operating in oil. The brake, being also of multi-disk type and operating in оil, was installed in the transmission and actuated the front axle. Constantly driving was the front axle having an ordinary differential drive from the gearbox. The rear axle was driven from the gearbox through the double-action overrunning clutch. The overrunning clutches automatically engaged the rear axle with 7% front wheels slippage.
In 1963, one of the T-5 tractor prototypes underwent the competitive propulsion performance tests at the NATI testing ground near Moscow, but such model had not been put in serial production. Subsequently, the tractor models with hydrostatic transmission (GT-55 model) and its forestry modification (T-5L) had been manufactured. The further design efforts of the «LTZ» R & D team in this field resulted in creating the following tractor models: T-80 (1966-1970), LIZ-100 (1972-1974), LTZ-150 (1973-1975) and LTZ-145 (1974-1984).
