Chernobyl museum of technics and robots
11 марта 2015
When a nuclear reactor in Chernobyl exploded all advanced technologies and available recourses were thrown to elimination of consequences of the accident. Harsh contaminated environment made people use robotics to eliminate consequences. On the 26 of April, 2011 in city of Chernobyl was opened an exhibition of technologies and robotics used in Immediate Crisis Management. Chernobyl area is still limited access territory, which may be visited by organized groups of people only.
STR-1 robot was used on the roof of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant helping cleaning the top of the NPP from radioactive wastes. The work was done in radiation level of 10,000 roentgens per hour.
Small robotic bulldozer was cleaning out trash after explosion. This small bulldozer was following big bulldozers driven by people. Scoop installed in front allowed the robot collect radioactive waste without help.
“Mobot” robot – is the first development of Bauman Moscow State University. It was used to clean roof of the Chernobyl NPP and install radiation inspection equipment.
Unfortunately not all robots were effective during Immediate Crisis Management. This Japanese RC amphibian bulldozer “KOMATSU” which can work at sea bottom couldn’t function well in high level of radiation and soon was defunct.
German MF-2 and MF-3 robots were also useless in Chernobyl.
