During this difficult economic period, Porsche design engineers boldly decide to go on the offensive. At the 1993 Detroit Motor Show, Porsche presents a design study of a classic mid-engine roadster that is very well received in the United States and beyond. The styling of this show car combines elements of the 356 "No. 1" and the 550 Spyder. The strong response leads to the series production of the Boxster, which begins in the fall of 1996.
