In June 1981 Weissach received green-light for building a two-seater racing car in compliance with the rules of Group C. In August Norbert Singer drove 1:05 scale model in the aerodynamic tube. On 27 March, 1982 Jurgen Barth drove the car with the chassis’s number 001 on the race track in Weissach for the first time. The rules of Group C limit the fuel consumption, and power is a question of critical importance, so aerodynamic becomes the major element. Path-breaking electron injector ignition system made possible for 2.6-liter turbo engine of 640 hp to provide 50-liter fuel consumption per 100 km.
According to the theory of downforce (F=p:2v2Aca), when this Porsche 956 reaches a speed of 321.4 km/h, it could theoretically drive on ceilings.
