The 180, introduced in 1953, marks the transition for Mercedes-Benz to the modern three-box design principle with its all-enveloping body. It got the name “Ponton” (German for pontoon) Mercedes because its silhouette resembles the cross section of a pontoon bridge. Unlike the prewar models, the 180 features an integral design in which the body and chassis form a single unit.
