The first Fiat 850 was launched on the market in 1964. An evolution of the Fiat 600, of which it maintained the same basic design: two-door saloon, seating 4/5, monocoque body, 4-cylinder, water-cooled rear engine, four-wheel independent suspension.
It was originally available in either a normal or super version, whereas the coupé and spider sports versions were unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show one year later. Instead the 850 Special dates from 1968 and was developed by combining the 850 saloon body (with improved trim) and the coupé engine, so it had a much more effervescent performance.
Other changes as regards the mechanicals were disc brakes at the front and larger tyres. It could be equipped with semi-automatic "Idroconvert" transmission at an additional cost of 75,000 lire (the basic sales price was 775,000 lire). Two million, two hundred thousand units of the 850 were produced from 1964 to 1971.
