The Lancia Delta was a model built by the Turin factory for twenty years, from 1979 to 1999, in two different series. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, it represented the middle-class Lancia for the Eighties and Nineties, and was so successful that it spurred Lancia on to give the same name again to a model it brought out in 2008.
The standard finishings and equipment justified the higher price compared with the competition (when it appeared it sold for between 7.5 and 8.7 million Lire, according to different reports). In 1980 it was awarded “Car of the Year” status, while in the following years sports versions for rallies were made, which won great acclaim and allowed Lancia to gain some unparalleled results (the Lancia Delta was the only car in history to win six consecutive world rally titles, from 1987 to 1992).
The example on show, designed for mass production, is the Delta Integrale Evoluzione, produced from 1991 to 1993, with a 16-valve engine, painted with Martini livery (used for competitions), many aesthetic details such as wider track width, side cambers, different bumpers, and mechanical improvements (to the suspensions, brakes, steering gearbox and the electronics). The price was suited to its features – around 45 million Lire.
