1951 Studebaker Champion

Studebaker Champion of the third generation came into the world in 1947, becoming the first post-war automobile of the company. The automobile repeated the success of the preceding generations – in the first year of selling right off the Champion share of sales comprised more than 65% of the company sales.

The exterior of the automobile was completely improved. The car styling was created in the crucial point of the automobile design. Just at that time the architecture of the car body originated, which is persisting today one way or another. Moreover, the automobiles of 1950 received a distinguished part, that stroke the eye the first – a spinner on the radiator grill.

The cars were equipped as before with a compact straight-six engine of 2.8 l capacity. The third generation of the Champion turned out to be successful and enduring as opposed to its antecedents and followers, substituting each other every two-three years. The cars of the third generation held out on the production line for six years.

The cars with an indicative propeller between the headlamps were noticed in more than two hundred and a half films. The most famous is “Mask” with Jim Carrey. Do you remember a rusty rattletrap, which was released to him in the service?
Despite the collective success of the Studebaker Champion model, produced till 1958, the company was actually crashed. The merger with the companies Packard, Hudson and Nash did not help the situation. Eventually, having made some more automobiles under its own brand the company Studebaker ceased the car production in 1966.

The Studebaker Champion of 1951 manufacturing year, serving in the USSR, also went rusty by the late 60ies. In the result of an injury the car lost the front an rear parts of the body, having preserved only the frame work.

In the 70s the car having a demolished look found the way to Vyborg to the leader of Scientific Research Institute of Defense Industry. The Studebaker was just revived from ruins by his hands with an assistance of extensive technical capabilities of the Scientific Research Institute! In the course of renovating works the car’s appearance was amended dramatically. Along with an external transformation the automobile got a new filling, which not all modern cars can boast of. A big V8 engine occupied the room under the hood. The automobile obtained adaptive headlamps, turning immediately after the driving wheel, screen-wipers on the headlights, fog lamps, electric adjustments and seat thermal electric devices, a steering booster with two hydraulic cylinders, supplementary air venting ducts, an auxiliary illumination of the interior, a good many receivers, electronic components and switches, the functionality of which fails to be ascertained today.

According to the opinion of many competent car enthusiasts and experts on automobiles classics in Russia, this recast from the USSR is even more successful than its factory initial brothers. Unfortunately, the rebuilding of the car was not finished. The owner of the car died… After that the automobile was laid up again and began to be ruined with someone’s hands: the engine disappeared and the interior was partially dismantled.
As a matter of fact, it is remarkable, that this is one of the three Champions, imported at some time to the Soviet Union, and one of the two survived to this day. Now a new restoring is waiting for the car. It was decided to fix a new powerful engine and renew the interior.
