Following the commercial success obtained by the 3500 GT Touring, the Maserati firm introduced a new two-seat coupe at the 1963 Turin Motor Show. Designed by Frua, the Mistral body (name given to the car only later on) foresaw stylish solutions, like the rear door or the front bumper including the air intake, that only in following years would be adopted by other car manufacturers. From the original 3500cc displacement the engine was soon increased to 3700cc and, since 1966, the car was offered with the optional 4-liter engine too. The Mistral remained into production until 1970 and it was the last Maserati Grand Tounng car fitted with a straight-cylinder engine, being the very warhorse of the firm both on the racing and series cars.
