In 1958 the Shah of Iran contacted Maserati to order “the fastest car in the world”. Maserati appointed Carrozzeria Touring to "dress" a tubular chassis like the one on the 3500GT with a body that was fit for its imperial owner driven by a new 5000 engine based on the 8-cylinder one of the 450S. This first 5000GT was followed by another 33 models built by Allemano, Bertone, Frua, Ghia, Michelotti, Monterosa and Pinin Farina for the creme de la creme of the world's aristocracy.
