The Maserati production range has always included spider or convertible versions which have always been a huge success with critics and sales alike. It was therefore natural to put an open-top version alongside the 3500 GT and in 1959 Maserati asked Carrozzeria Vignale to present a proposal designed by Giovanni Michelotti. The vehicle on display is one of the prototypes and was presented at the Vignale stand at the Turin Auto Show in 1959. A number of details differentiate it from the model that went into production in 1960.
