The Shanghai SH760 is a car produced in China from 1964 to 1991 primarily for government officials not important enough to warrant a FAW Hong Qi. They were based on the Mercedes-Benz 180 'Ponton' models of the 1950s, with different front and rear styling but the centre section unchanged.
The Shanghai Automobile assembly line produced its first car on 28 September 1958, called Fenghuang (meaning Phoenix in English). It was also the first production car produced in China. Only very few Phoenix sedans were produced between then and 1960. The Phoenix models are distinguished by round headlights and fins to the rear.
In 1964, the Phoenix changed its name to Shanghai SH760, and by 1965 was in full production. In 1968 and 1974, the SH760 underwent a series of cosmetic updates (SH760A and SH760B respectively). The final SH760 was produced on 25 November 1991, after a total production run of 79,526 cars. Production peaked in 1984 at around 6,000 units.
The SH760 was powered by a 2.2 litre straight six engine developing 90 bhp (67 kW; 91 PS) and coupled with a 4-speed manual gearbox. As with the basis of the bodywork, this was a copy of 1950s Mercedes-Benz mechanicals.
