This locomotive represents the transition towards the modern steam locomotive. The 2-4-0 locomotive Mastodon was the first of this kind to run on the Spanish lines. They were the first milestone on a long productive way to the building of more than 700 Mastodon units along forty years, what proves them to be the most suitable and characteristic model of the Spanish Railways. At the time, it was an avant-garde locomotive, conceived to tow passenger trains on the Madrid-Andalucia route, especially to pass Despenaperros. However, its characteristics also made it a suitable goods machine. They would be used for these services on the same line little time later, what it did-together with suburb area services- until 1968 .
