This is one of the vehicles in the museum with a longest life. The funicular railway in Barcelona was inaugurated in October 1906 and worked till January 1998. The “Funi” travels from the base station at 192 m to Vallvidrera superior at 356 m in the Sierra de Collserola. It overcomes gradients of more than 1 in 4 in its route. This is one of the two original coaches. The bodywork (of Swiss origin) was probably built by a carpenter’s workshop of Barcelona. It had two brake devices and oil lighting, replaced in the 20’s by electric lighting. In 1980 it was renovated, keeping its more visible characteristics. The movement of the “Funi” is possible thanks to an electric engine installed at the upper station. This engine moves a winch with a wound cable that pulls along the two vehicles. The engine transmits its effort through drums, gears, wheels and pinions Part of these devices can be seen next to the vehicle.
