The “Volga” GAZ-21 is a Soviet medium car, commercially produced at Gorky automobile plant from 1956 (1957)[1] till 1970 год[2]. The model factory designation was initially GAZ-M-21, and later on (since 1965) — GAZ-21. A total of 639, 478 items of all modifications were produced.
The automobiles of the production from 1956 till November 1958 received afterwards the name “the first series” (as well as “the first production” and “with a star”).
There were altogether five cars in the series of 1956. Mass production began only in the next year.
Till the end of 1957 the car was produced with an high-powered L-head engine from the car “Pobeda”, that had increased capacity due to the cylinders boring up to 88 mm, and an enlarged degree of compression up to 7.0:1 (2.42 L., 65 hp at 3,800 rev/min, torsion torque 15.8 kg •m) — a total of 1,100 cars were made. Today it is one of the rarest modifications. An L-head engine aggregated only with a mechanical gearbox.
In summer of 1957 the preparation of the production for an own engine of ZMZ-21 model was finished, supplied by newly built Zavolzhskiy motor factory (2.445 L, 70 hp), and in the end of the year the plant started equipping automobiles with a new engine.
More than 30, 000 cars of all modifications with such arrangement were produced.
